Thomas Hobbes thought that the perfect form of government was a monarchy, and stressed the importance of an absolute monarch in his book The Laviathan. John Locke's philosphies were very different from Hobbes', in his book Two Treateses on Government he stressed the importance of 'the self' and beleived that human nature was characterized by reason and tolerance. One of Locke's most popular ideas, the natural rights of life, liberty, and property was later adopted into the United StatesDeclaration of Independence , by Thomas Jefferson.
Religious
Religion and Politics intertwined greatly during 17th Century Europe. Both the Thirty Years War and the English Civil War were influenced by these factors.
Governments gained control over the religion their state practiced, through either the Protestant Reformation or the Counter Reformation. Religious tolerance became more prevalent. Religion was also used as a means to legitimize the nobles’ power struggles, thus gaining public support for their conflicts. The two major conflicts of this time werre the English Civil War, and the Thirty Years War.
Religious ideas were manipulated to buid power in politics. Oliver Cromwell was well known for using religion, in the English Civil War, to strengthen his New Model Army's spirits. The tactic seemed to work well since the army was unbeatable against the Kin's forces.
